Description
Power tong jaws Drilling Dies
RIGRS supplies replacement power tong dies and inserts for drill pipe, casing and tubing tongs used in drilling, workover and well-service operations. Standard and custom dies are available for hydraulic power tongs and manual rig tongs, including compatible replacements for selected BJ, Woolley, Eckel, Farr, Web Wilson and other commonly used tong models.
Available gripping surfaces include pyramid tooth, straight tooth, coarse tooth and application-specific profiles. For CRA, chrome and corrosion-resistant tubulars, non-marking grit-face inserts can be supplied separately.
To identify the correct replacement, send us the tong manufacturer and model, pipe OD, existing part number, die dimensions and required quantity. If the part number is unavailable, send clear photos of the front, back and side of the existing die.
Why Buyers Choose RIGRS Tong Dies:
- The dies are manufactured from selected alloy steel.
- The dies are chemically heat-treating for surface hardness.
- The dies and slip inserts are designed for wear resistance and consistent gripping performance.
- Customized products are available.
OEM Compatibility
RIGRS tong dies and slip inserts are compatible not only with our own equipment, but also with tong and slip systems from major OEM brands, including Varco and Baash-Ross.
Custom Tong Dies / Slip Inserts — Information Required for Quotation
Please provide your existing tong or slip model, a drawing or dimensioned sketch, or a sample that you would like us to match.
Tong dies are normally quoted by piece or by complete set, depending on the tong model. Price is determined by the die dimensions, material, tooth profile, surface treatment, order quantity and whether new tooling is required.
Stocked standard sizes may be supplied in small quantities. Custom dies manufactured from drawings or samples are subject to a model-specific minimum order quantity.
Lead time depends on stock status and inspection requirements. Please send the tong model, pipe OD, part number and quantity to confirm the current price and delivery schedule.
Materials and Durability
RIGRS tong dies and slip inserts are manufactured from high-quality alloy steel and undergo chemical heat treatment to increase surface hardness. Special surface treatments are also applied to improve wear and corrosion resistance.
They are designed to maintain reliable gripping performance through repeated make-up and break-out operations while reducing the risk of slippage.
Types of Jaw Plates for Oilfield Use
| Type | Application | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Drill Pipe Tong Dies | Used in drill pipe make-up/break-out | Hard teeth, tight grip, minimal slippage |
| Casing Tong Dies | For casing connections | Wider bite area to avoid casing deformation |
| Tubing Tong Dies | For smaller-diameter tubing | Lightweight and precise grip |
| Power Tong Jaw Plates | Used in hydraulic tongs | High torque, durable, interchangeable inserts |
| Manual Tong Jaw Plates | Used in mechanical tongs | Cost-effective and easy to replace |
RIGRS supplies tong dies and inserts for a range of commonly used tong models with popular brands like NOV, BJ, and Eckel.
Power Tong Dies for Drill Pipe, Casing and Tubing
The correct tong die must match both the tong jaw or die slot and the outside diameter of the tubular being handled. RIGRS supplies dies for make-up and break-out operations involving drill pipe, casing, production tubing and other oilfield tubulars.
Drill Pipe Power Tong Dies
Replacement dies are available for hydraulic drill pipe tongs used during connection make-up and break-out. When requesting a quotation, specify the tong model, drill pipe OD, die dimensions and tooth direction.
Casing Tong Dies
Casing tong dies are supplied according to the tong model and casing OD. The gripping profile must provide sufficient holding force without creating excessive localized loading on the pipe body.
Tubing Tong Dies
Tubing tong dies are available for commonly used hydraulic tubing tongs. Because several tong models may cover the same tubing OD with different jaw and die arrangements, the tong model should always be confirmed before production.
Manual Rig Tong Dies
Manual tong dies are available for Type B, DB and other commonly used rig tong configurations. Standard replacement sizes and custom dies manufactured from drawings or samples can be quoted.
Cross-Reference & Compatibility Ledger
To streamline your warehousing and inventory management, our products are engineered to be 100% physically interchangeable with standard oilfield equipment. Please use our engineering part numbers to align with your fleet’s active tools:
Manual & Power Tong Dies (Pyramid & Straight Tooth Profiles)
BJ Type B / DB / MS Tongs Compatible: Suitable for standard manual tongs and high-torque rotary tongs. Available sizes: 1/2″ x 1-1/4″ x 5″ and 1/2″ x 1-1/4″ x 5-7/8″.
Woolley & Web Wilson Style: Engineered to withstand high-torque breakout actions without tooth shearing.
Hydraulic Power Tong Dies: Tailored for heavy-duty automated casing and tubing tongs. Features bidirectional grip profiles to secure joints during both make-up and break-out rotations.
Rotary Slip Dies & Inserts
Varco SD / SDL / SDS Rotary Slips Compatible: Fully hardened slip die segments designed for optimal pipe-centering friction.
Cavins / BJ Tubing Spider Inserts: Premium slip dies designed to prevent micro-fissures and wall-thinning on small-diameter production tubing.
Non-Marking & CRA Grit-Face Inserts (Zero-Damage Grasping)
CRA Grip & Grit Face Dies: Specifically formulated for Chrome, Super Chrome, and high-nickel alloy steel strings. Utilizing a high-friction tungsten carbide coating bonded to a flat steel base, these non-marking inserts prevent surface scarring and stress-corrosion cracking on expensive CRA pipes.
Find a Replacement Tong Die by Model or Part Number
A tong die cannot be identified reliably by pipe size alone. Different tong manufacturers may use different die lengths, widths, backing profiles and locking arrangements for the same tubular OD.
Please send any of the following information available:
Tong manufacturer and model
Pipe, casing or tubing outside diameter
Existing die part number
Length, width and thickness
Tooth direction or gripping surface
Quantity required per set
Photos of the front, back and side
Required delivery date
If the original part number cannot be found, RIGRS can compare the dimensions and mounting profile against a drawing or physical sample.
Technical Advantages of RIGRS tong dies
CNC machining is used to control the die dimensions, mounting profile and tooth geometry. Batch identification and applicable inspection records can be supplied according to the agreed order requirements. Available manufacturing processes may include carburizing, nitriding and tungsten carbide grit application, depending on the type of die and its intended use.
Tong dies Maintenance guidelines:
Inspect dies before every shift.Replace all dies simultaneously to maintain uniform grip.Keep the dies clean and oil-free during operation.Store spare dies in dry, rust-proof packaging.Regrind or replace when wear depth exceeds 0.5 mm.
Proper maintenance extends service life and reduces the risk of pipe damage or connection failure.
