Description
RIGRS Type C, Type T and MP Series Safety Clamps for Drilling and Workover Operations
Safety Clamps are used for handling flush joint pipe, drill collars or other non-shouldered tool diameters. The safety clamp is used to help prevent tools from sliding into the hole while making-up or breakingout.
Select the Correct Oilfield Safety Clamp by Pipe OD
RIGRS supplies safety clamps for handling drill collars, flush-joint pipe and other non-shouldered tubulars during drilling and workover operations.
Available configurations include:
Type C Safety Clamp
Type T Safety Clamp
MP-S
MP-R
MP-M
MP-L
MP-XL
Safety clamp selection should be based on the actual outside diameter of the tubular, required gripping range and clamp series.

Safety Clamp manufacturer
The Safety Clamp consists of individual links, flexibly hinged together. Each link has a separate tapered slip which acts as a gripping member, much like a tapered rotary slip, and each slip is held in a retracted position on the taper by spring tension. When the clamp is tightened, each small slip take a firm initial grip on the surface of the pipe. Should the pipe start to fall, or should load increase occur against the slips, the taper mounting causes each slip to wedge tighter against the surface of the pipe to increase the grip or lock the pipe against further movement.
Gripping pressure is always uniform around the pipe so there is little danger of crushing thin-walled pipe or damaging the pipe surface. And, since each link, complete with tapered slip, is interchangeable as a unit, the Safety Clamp is readily adaptable to virtually any diameter. Each link changes the effective gripping diameter of the clamp one inch. All parts are made of alloy steel, heat-treated for strength and gripping ability.
There are two types of Safety Clamps:
Safety Clamps Type MP are necessary tools for handling drill collars, flush joint pipes and small shoulder pipes. They could adjust pipes of different sizes by changing the quantity of chain links.
Safety Clamps Type C and T are necessary tools for handling flush joint pipes and drill collars. They can accommodate pipes from 1-1/8” to 15-5/8”.
Features
- 1.Type C Safety clamps can accommodate pipe from 3-1/2” to 15-5/8”
- 2.Type T clamps can accommodate pipe from 1-1/8” to 4-1/2”
- 3.Type MP clamps can accommodate pipe from 2-7/8” to 29-3/8”
Drill Collar Safety Clamp
Drill collars are one of the most common applications for oilfield safety clamps.
Because drill collars may not provide the same external shoulder geometry as standard tool joints, a safety clamp can provide additional restraint during handling operations.
For drill collar clamp selection, provide:
Drill collar OD
Gripping location OD
Existing clamp model, if applicable
Required quantity
Spare-link requirement
Send Drill Collar OD → Get Clamp Selection
Safety Clamp for Flush-Joint Pipe
Flush-joint tubulars may require a safety clamp where there is no sufficient external shoulder for conventional handling support.
Selection should consider:
Actual pipe OD
Wall thickness
Surface condition
Available gripping length
Required clamp range
Operating procedure
For unusual pipe sizes, send a drawing or tubular datasheet for review.
Safety Clamp for Downhole Tools
Safety clamps may also be used on selected downhole tools where the tool body provides a suitable gripping surface.
Possible applications include:
Downhole motors
Drill collars
Subs
Selected BHA components
Before use, confirm:
Tool OD
Surface finish
Hardfacing or coating
Available gripping length
Clamp compatibility
Do not select a clamp only from the nominal tool description.
How to Select the Correct Safety Clamp
1. Confirm the Actual Tubular OD
Measure or verify the outside diameter at the intended gripping location.
2. Identify the Tubular Type
Confirm whether the clamp will be used on:
Drill collar
Flush-joint pipe
Drill pipe
Downhole tool
Other non-shouldered tubular
3. Select the Clamp Series
Choose between:
Type T
Type C
MP Series
according to the approved gripping range.
4. Confirm the Number of Links
The number of links determines the usable gripping range within the selected clamp series.
5. Review the Tubular Surface
Confirm whether the gripping area includes:
Coating
Hardfacing
Machined surface
Corrosion
Previous gripping damage
6. Confirm Spare Parts
For long-term drilling or workover projects, consider ordering spare gripping elements, links, pins and springs together with the main clamp.
RIGRS Safety Clamp – FAQ
Q1: How do I select a safety clamp for a drill collar?
A: Provide the drill collar OD at the intended gripping location. The clamp series and required number of links can then be selected from the approved size range.
Q2: Can a safety clamp be used on drill pipe?
A: It may be used on selected drill pipe or non-shouldered sections where the tool design and rig procedure permit. The actual gripping OD and surface condition should be checked before use.
Q3: How many links are required?
A: The required number of links depends on the actual pipe OD and selected clamp series. Send the pipe OD for model and link-count selection.
Q4: Can individual safety clamp links be replaced?
A: Replacement links and related gripping components can be supplied according to the clamp model and dimensions.
