We commonly use 8 “and 10” cones desander to separate solid-phase particle size 44-74 in the drilling fluids.Oilfield drilling desander is the best choices for small oilfield solids control system for CBM, water well drilling, mining exploration industry etc. It is reliable, effective and serves long. The content of sand after the desander is controlled below 0.15%.

How a Mud Cleaner Works in a Drilling Rig Solids-Control System
A mud cleaner is normally installed downstream of the primary shale shaker within the active drilling-fluid solids-control system.
The typical process is:
1. Primary shale shaker removes larger drilled cuttings.
2. Hydrocyclone feed pump sends drilling fluid to the mud cleaner manifold.
3. Desander and/or desilter cones separate finer solids from the liquid phase.
4. Hydrocyclone underflow is discharged onto the mud cleaner shaker screen.
5. Fine screen separation rejects unwanted solids while recoverable fluid passes through the screen.
6. Recovered drilling fluid returns to the active mud tank.
The correct mud cleaner capacity should be matched to the rig circulation rate so that untreated fluid is not bypassed around the solids-control stage.
How to Size a Mud Cleaner by Circulation Rate
The required mud cleaner capacity should be equal to or greater than the maximum drilling-fluid circulation rate that must pass through the cleaner stage.
Buyers should confirm:
Maximum pump circulation rate
Expected active mud flow through the solids-control system
Number and capacity of hydrocyclones
Feed pressure
Mud density and viscosity
Available tank and skid space
Oversizing the cone manifold without sufficient feed flow can reduce hydrocyclone performance, while undersizing the unit can result in untreated bypass.
Mud Recovery in Weighted Drilling Fluids
In weighted mud systems, directly discarding hydrocyclone underflow can also discard useful liquid and weighting material.
A mud cleaner sends the hydrocyclone underflow onto a fine shaker screen so that part of the recoverable drilling fluid can return to the active system while larger drilled solids are rejected.
Actual recovery performance depends on screen selection, mud properties, solids distribution and operating conditions.
Product classification of RIGRS Mud Cleaner Product Range:
1.Desander + Shaker Combination
Removes 45–74 micron solids.
Common in medium-depth land rigs.
2.Desilter + Shaker Combination
Removes 15–45 micron solids.
Used for finer control in deeper wells.
3.High-Capacity Mud Cleaners
Designed for offshore and HPHT drilling, handling large circulation volumes.
Equipped with multiple cones and high G-force shakers.
Mud Cleaner for WBM, OBM and SBM
Mud cleaners may be configured for water-based, oil-based and synthetic-based drilling fluids, but screen selection, elastomer compatibility, electrical requirements and operating parameters should be confirmed for the intended mud system.
Mud cleaner Product use:
- Completely purify slurry, effectively control slurry performance, reduce the sand-jamming accidents and improve pore-forming quality;
- Realize sluy recycling usage and save slurry making material; Drastically reduce the waste slurry transportation cost and slurry making cost.
Mud Cleaner vs Desander vs Desilter
| Equipment | Main Function | Typical Hydrocyclone | Typical Separation Role | Underflow Shaker |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Desander | Remove larger sand-size solids | Larger cones, commonly around 10 in | Coarser secondary separation | Optional |
| Desilter | Remove finer silt-size solids | Smaller cones, commonly around 4 in | Finer tertiary separation | Optional |
| Mud Cleaner | Recover usable mud from hydrocyclone underflow | Desander and/or desilter cones | Integrated secondary/tertiary cleaning | Yes |
A mud cleaner is not simply another name for a desander. It is normally an integrated solids-control package in which hydrocyclone underflow is processed again over a shaker screen.
What do you need to know when purchasing a mud cleaner?
Processing Capacity (GPM or m³/h) – Must match rig circulation rate.
Cone Size & Number (10” for desanders, 4” for desilters) – Determines cut point and efficiency.
Shaker Deck Size & Screen Mesh – Affects recovery and solids separation.
Motor Power & Vibration Strength – Ensures reliable performance in demanding conditions.
Footprint & Skid Design – Must fit into rig’s existing mud system layout.
